WICB CEO Bruce Aanensen and Chris Gayle
On Sunday, Cricinfo executive editor Martin Williamson wondered about the West Indies Cricket Board, How Low Can They Go? With events that have unfolded since then it seems that the WICB is desperately trying to find the answer to that question as well.
Last week Chris Gayle spoke his mind in his Cricinfo blog, calling out the WICB for the mess it created by first rejecting Gayle and then appointing him as stand in ODI captain, and for not having flown in the replacement ODI players in time for a practice match leading the board to have to draft in replacement players from local English leagues. Wrote Gayle:
First and foremost I am very disappointed with the West Indian cricket board (WICB) for not having the guys here in England already and ready to play.
He also expressed his hurt in how his nomination for captain was initially treated by the WICB:
As the captain I have to say that this is disappointing and it is not at all a good start. I also have to mention that I was hurt and disappointed that after I was nominated as captain by the selectors, I did not initially get the support of the board.
He also went on to say that the players wanted "change" and "the best" from the WICB:
The board is always talking about players needing to change but we, the players, need changes from the board as well. We can't be out in the wilderness all the time because we are the ones who are getting all the blame.
These are some of the things that we as players have to go through. The WICB says they want the best out of players but we also need the best out of the board.
Every word that Gayle wrote is true. He has not misrepresented the WICB in any way. However, strictly speaking, Gayle should probably have made these points privately with the board, after all, which organization would want its employees publicly criticising it?
Now, instead of taking the PR smart route of taking responsibility for the late arrival of the ODI players, the WICB has taken the brute force approach as President Ken Gordon met with Gayle and "requested" that Gayle apologise for speaking his mind and telling the truth. Having a backbone, Gayle refused to apologise, leading the WICB to issue this press release stating that the WICB had issued Gayle a "strongly-worded letter" and that they "will pursue this matter at the end of the tour". They also made reference to Gayle's previous "outburst" (their word, not mine) when Gayle said that he disagreed with the 11:30 curfew, but that the players would abide by it.
Gayle did not cause "unnecessary embarrassment" for the WICB, as the WICB's overstated press release claims, it was the WICB's own actions that led to them being the laughing stock of the cricketing world. And still we do not have an apology for the late arrival of the players or even an explanation from the WICB. Meanwhile the Board's CEO, Bruce Aanensen, has been busy calling the West Indies players "incompetent", a charge that just as easily could be leveled at him and the board and a charge more inflammatory than anything Gayle said. Is Gordon going to try to muzzle Aanensen as well? Or is it ok for the board to criticise the players but the reverse is not allowed?
What we have in West Indies cricket is a crisis of leadership. The players have underperformed over and over again - but who is going to hold them accountable? A board that can't get right the logistics of a simple thing such as organising travel for some players? A board whose President wants to censure a player for speaking his mind, while its CEO is insulting the players in the next breath? The WICB has lost the respect of much of the cricketing world and instead of trying to regain that respect, is digging a deeper whole for itself.
Any impartial observer will recognise that a harmonious WICB and WIPA relationship will undoubtedly be to the benefit of West Indies cricket. Instead, WIPA is looking out for rights of the players almost exclusively and the WICB seems hellbent on protecting its own interests, rather than getting on with the business of giving credible leadership to West Indies cricket.
Is their any hope for West Indies cricket in this situation?

If there was any doubt as to the correctness of Gayle's position, then certainly the performance of the team under his leadership must confirm that. Remember however that Sarwan is the captain and should remain captain when he returns. Gayle should be made regular vice captain IMO.
